The Newcomen Memorial Engine in Dartmouth

I was reading Fred Dibnah's "Age of Steam" book recently and he mentions Thomas Newcomen and Dartmouth. It struck me that I had visited the Newcomen Memorial Engine when last in Dartmouth, so I thought i'd write a brief post about it.

If you’re exploring the picturesque streets of Dartmouth, Devon – with its historic harbour, cobbled lanes, and naval heritage – you might not expect to find one of the most important machines in the history of the Industrial Revolution right next to the tourist information centre. But there it is: the Newcomen Memorial Engine, a beautifully preserved beam engine that quietly tells the story of how steam power changed the world.

Who Was Thomas Newcomen?

Thomas Newcomen was born in Dartmouth in February 1664 (some sources say 1663). By trade he was an ironmonger and a Baptist lay preacher, but his real genius lay in engineering. Working with his partner John Calley, a plumber and glazier, Newcomen solved one of the biggest problems of the early 18th century: flooding in coal and tin mines.

In 1712 he built and installed the world’s first practical steam engine at a colliery near Dudley in the West Midlands.

Unlike earlier attempts (such as Thomas Savery’s pump), Newcomen’s design used a piston inside a cylinder and harnessed atmospheric pressure rather than steam pressure alone. It was safe, reliable, and could pump water from far greater depths.

What Exactly Is the Newcomen Memorial Engine?

The engine you see in Dartmouth today is a genuine early Newcomen atmospheric beam engine dating from around 1725. It features:

  • A single 22-inch (56 cm) diameter cylinder
  • A 5-foot (1.5 m) stroke
  • A massive 12-foot wooden beam pivoted on a timber frame

Originally built for Griff Colliery near Nuneaton, it pumped water from mine depths of up to 140 feet at 12 strokes per minute - shifting an incredible 68,200 litres of water every hour. It later worked at Oakthorpe Colliery, then spent nearly a century (1821–1913) keeping the Coventry Canal topped up at Hawkesbury Junction.

In 1963–64, to mark the 300th anniversary of Newcomen’s birth, the Newcomen Society rescued, restored, and re-erected it in its inventor’s hometown. Today it sits in the Engine House (a former electricity substation) attached to the Dartmouth Visitor Centre. It no longer runs on steam – modern hydraulics gently move the beam and piston so visitors can see exactly how it operated.

How it actually works (in simple terms):

Steam from a boiler fills the cylinder. Cold water is sprayed in, condensing the steam and creating a vacuum. Atmospheric pressure then pushes the piston down, pulling one end of the beam and lifting the pump rod on the other end to draw water out of the mine. The cycle repeats - simple, brilliant, and revolutionary.

Why Is It So Important?

This isn’t just any old engine. It is:

  • The oldest preserved steam engine in the world
  • A direct descendant of the very first successful Newcomen design
  • The machine that made deep coal mining possible, fuelling Britain’s Industrial Revolution
  • The direct ancestor of James Watt’s improved engines, which powered factories, trains, and ships

Over 2,000 Newcomen engines were built across Britain and Europe. Without them, the modern world would have looked very different. In 1981 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) designated it an International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark – one of only a handful of such honours in the UK.

Dartmouth is rightly proud of its native son. The town’s connection to this “fire engine” (as they were once called) is a wonderful reminder that world-changing innovation can come from the most unlikely places – in this case, a Devon ironmonger’s workshop.

It’s literally right on the main road into town, next to the gardens and just a short walk from the harbour. Entry is free (it shares space with the tourist information centre), and the engine is demonstrated regularly so you can see the beam rocking and the piston moving. Opening hours follow the Visitor Centre – usually daily, but it’s always worth checking the Explore Dartmouth website before you go.

Final Thoughts

The Newcomen Memorial Engine might not have the glamour of a steam train or the drama of a huge mill engine, but it is the quiet grandfather of them all. Standing beside it, watching that ancient beam rise and fall, you’re looking at the spark that lit the Industrial Revolution – and it all started here in a small Devon town.
