Tubal Cain's "Elizabeth"

If you've poked around model engineering books or forums for beginner-friendly live steam projects, you've probably come across Tubal Cain's Building Simple Model Steam Engines (Special Interest Model Books / Tee Publishing). It's a classic — clear drawings, no-nonsense instructions, and designs that teach real skills without overwhelming a newcomer.

After finishing my setup and some practice pieces, I decided Elizabeth — the horizontal oscillating steam power plant from that book — would be my first proper running steam engine.

Why Elizabeth?

She's straightforward: single oscillating cylinder, simple valve timing via the port face, no slide valve or eccentric to fuss with, compact footprint, and she looks nice sitting on a baseplate with a sensible flywheel. Tubal Cain designed her as a "power plant" — something you could actually use to drive a small dynamo or line-shaft model if you wanted — but I was after something I could enjoy watching chuffing happily on compressed air first, then steam.

What Elizabeth Actually Is

  • Horizontal layout
  • Oscillating cylinder (rocks back and forth to cover/uncover ports)
  • Single-acting (power stroke one way only)
  • 1/4" Bore
  • Flywheel 1 3/4 - 2" diameter for smooth running

The book walks you through it step by step: material choices (mostly mild steel and brass), machining operations on a small lathe and mill, with assembly tips & tricks.

Building Elizabeth

Key parts:

  • Baseplate — I chose to use aluminium sheet for lightness. 2 holes drilled for the columns, countersunk on the underside. I decided to chamfer the edges.
  • Columns — turned from hex bar, threaded ends as per drawings.
  • Engine Frame — made from 3/4" brass angle.
  • Pin — brass
  • Cylinder — as mentioned by Tubal Cain, I also managed to locate some brass tube with 1/4" bore. It just needing machining to length.
  • Port Block — 5/16"
  • Piston & rod — turned piston to ream-fit, cross-drilled for the little end pin.
  • Big End Brass — 1/4" brass square section.
  • Flywheel

If you're thinking of building Elizabeth yourself, I'd say go for it — it's an ideal "first engine" that teaches key basic machining skills without scary complexity. The book is still in print and reasonably priced second-hand too.
